Jackman showed off his versatility with an extended song and dance number that featured Neil Patrick Harris and other Broadway stars.
The 45-year-old Australian actor, who had a recent scare with skin cancer, opened the show from the red carpet outside.
He hopped into the theater, hopped and skipped down the aisle and high-fiving guests. He passed on the steps and leaped onto the stage about two feet off the floor.
The four-time host slipped on his tuxedo jacket, with the help of two hopping assistants, and disappeared back stage. He greeted some of the night’s acts.
He shook hands with musician Sting, jumped rope in front of some props with the star of the musical Rocky, and hopped through some Aladdin dancers before ending up in an elevator with Harris.
Hugh hopped by some other acts backstage before he returned to the theater and broke into a song and dance. Jackman was paying homage to Bobby Van’s hop dance in the 1953 musical “Small Town Girl,” according to CBS.
The extended musical number featured some of the year’s top Broadway shows.
Jackman was a delightful host throughout the night, and showed the same kind of energy. Why isn’t he hosting the Oscars?
