Heather Headley, who won a 2000 Tony Award for “Aida,” will take over the role. Her addition to the show was announced last month.
Headley joins “The Color Purple” tomorrow (May 10). She’ll star with Cynthia Erivo, Danielle Brooks (“Orange Is the New Black”) Isiah Johnson and other cast members.
Hudson broke out in 2004 on the television variety show “American Idol,” even though she did not win her season. She skyrocketed to stardom as an actress, following her film debut in the 2006 biopic “Dreamgirls.”
She won the Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress and added marquee power to the show.
In January a year ago, Hudson revealed she would be making her Broadway debut as Shug Avery in the Broadway musical’s revival, which opened last December.
She’s set to play Motormouth Maybelle in the live NBC live telecast of the musical Hairspray. The network’s latest stage musical following the phenomenal success of “The Wiz Live!” will air Wed., Dec. 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
