Every aspect of Just in Time, the homage to ’50s crooner Bobby Darin, immediately entrances audiences the moment they enter Circle in the Square Theatre, radiantly redesigned to resemble a sultry nightclub.

Darin was a singer, songwriter, and actor, whose remarkable talent was cut short from a heart ailment ar 37, when he was at the height of his career.

This immersive experience envelops avid fans as well as those who are new to his songs and story.

Jonathan Groff, who plays Darin, grips everyone in the room from the start, entering to “Just in Time” clad in a snazzy tuxedo amidst Andrew Resnick’s and Michael Thurber’s sensational orchestrations.

Groff knows that Just in Time is his show, and he makes no bones about it.

“I’m Jonathan,” he says as he completes his unforgettable entrance. “I’ll be your Bobby Darin tonight. How about these digs? Not bad for the basement of Wicked.”

Neither Groff, nor the show, takes itself too seriously, despite the phenomenal set design that transports audiences back to the ’50s and ’60s as they’re planted immediately into the story’s action.

Lucky theatergoers are seated in the center of the room at nightclub tables, with the cast weaving in and out, sometimes even sitting among the audience.

It’s worth the extra price of admission simply to have Groff sing to you, give you a twirl, or share a classic wink.

Most of Darin’s story will come as no surprise. As a young, sick child, he overheard his doctor tell his mother that it would be a miracle if he lived past the age of 16.

He set out to prove his doctor wrong and live life extra hard. As he traversed and conquered the music scene, he fell in love with singer Connie Francis (Gracie Lawrence) and saw his first gold record with “Splish Splash,” a novelty song he penned on a dare in 1958.

Yet, despite his accomplishments, Darin never felt fulfilled.

The supporting women in his life, his mother (Michelle Pawk, moving at every turn), his sister (Emily Bergl), and his second headlining love, Sandra Dee (Erika Henningsen) are as dynamic as they are vibrant.

Time has a phenomenal Greek chorus, including Cesar Samayoa and Lance Roberts (who play everyone from Ed Sullivan to Murray the K) and Darin’s “Sirens:” Valeria Yamin, Christine Cornish, and Julia Grondin.

Groff brings energy to a story that is not exactly typical Broadway musical material.

Time’s only obstacle is the fact that it’s a bio-musical about someone whose story is not entirely unique. However, under Groff’s care, coupled with Alex Timbers’ stellar direction, the show becomes a brilliant force.

Though his untimely death hangs over Just in Time, Groff’s Darin is uplifting even at his lowest moments.

The panache and creativity in the endless hits, including “Mack the Knife,” “Up a Lazy River,” and “Things,” is astounding in its seamless delivery.

Timbers’ signature immensely creative direction is evident at every turn, from the immersive environment to the exciting staging.

Derek McLane’s industrial art decor is swathed in a soothing blue that you can practically taste. Coupled with Justin Townsend’s lighting design, the show is a cavalcade of color.

Whether a fan of Darin or Groff, this musical is just in time to close out the season while leaving fans wanting more.
