
The song appeared on Stefani’s debut solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby and Pharrell co-wrote it with her and Chad Hugo.
What’s more, the song was a light-hearted, but pointed jab at wacky rocker Courtney Love, who dismissed Stefani as a “cheerleader”
in an interview with Seventeen magazine.

Stefani, now 44, was struggling to come up with a song that would really capture the spirit of her solo album. After spending a week with Pharrell in a New York City Studio, the last song they cut was “Hollaback Girl.”
“We looked at each other when we wrote that song and we were like, ‘That’s it!’ It’s a song that says, you know, you don’t have to answer back. To me, it is the freshest attitude song I’ve heard in so long,” she said.
