Tom Cruise has been a high octane actor since his star turn in 1983’s “Risky Business.” But his “Mission Impossible” film series has been his oeuvre.
Known for playing over-the-top characters in nearly 50 movies, Cruise made “Mission Impossible” his own when his newly formed production company picked up the rights — his first project — in the early ’90s.
His character, Ethan Hunt is a mix of cool intellect, sharp martial skills and eye-popping, self-performed stunts.
The stunts alone made the series worth a trip to the theater. The overall premise, of course, is formulaic, based loosely on the hit 1966 television series by the same name.
But the scenery, always breath-taking and exotic, and the plots, a variation on the theme, were enough to make the films a must watch. The stunts put it over the top.
It’s what you could call a good “popcorn movie.”
The original Cruise film, simply titled “Mission Impossible,” was released in 1996 to generally favorable reviews and grossed $458 million worldwide –third highest that year — cementing it as franchise material.
Now, Cruise’s eighth release, “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning,” is set to go wide in theaters (May 25, to kick off the summer season.
Judging by the first trailer, released today (Nov. 11), it delivers just like all the others, even though Cruise, at 62, is getting a little long in the tooth to play an action hero.
Apparently Cruise feels the same way. The film concludes the series and follows 2023’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.”
Cruise’s character is feeling his age, as well, Part one ended with Hunt in pursuit of a cyber weapon called “The Entity.” In the finale, Hunt makes the case for letting him go on one last mission.
“Everything you were, everything you’ve done, has come to this,” a voice-over intones.

The mission proves to be impossible and calls for Hunt’s special talents, only if “he should choose to accept.” Of course, he does — no challenge is too great for the spy-master.
Watch the trailer closely and you’ll see all of Tom’s returning co-stars, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Vanessa Kirby. Esai Morales also returns as the villain Gabriel.
The trailer mostly focuses on high-tech weapons and gadgets — another series staple. But a World War II-era biplane, which Cruise reportedly learned to fly, plays a starring role as well. Quick cuts of scenes from his previous movies also flash on screen.
“I need you to trust me one last time,” Hunt says eerily at the end of the clip.
“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” wasn’t the best performing film in the series, but don’t blame the movie. It had to battle “Oppenheimer,” for screen time and was cut short, despite Tom’s pleading for an extended run.
It would be great to watch them back-to-back.
This is also not the last we’ll see of Cruise. He has a rom-com in the works titled “Judy,” co-written and co-produced by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
It co-stars Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed.
And, don’t worry, it will have plenty of action.
Cruise plays a man who sees himself as the world’s savior tries to stop the catastrophic events he set into motion, according to an early synopsis.
