Lorde was wearing more than a gown at the Grammys last night. A secret message containing a radical feminist essay was sewn into the hem of her dress. She says it explains why she didn’t wear a white rose. So why did she refuse to perform?

Lorde was protesting in other ways, as well. She was fuming over a Grammy snub, according to reports.

She was the only Album of the Year nominee who was not scheduled to perform a solo on the show.

In protest, she declined to be part of a tribute to the late Tom Petty. It would have been a group performance of his song ‘American Girl,” Hollywood trade rag Variety reported.

Instead, the memorial tribute starred Chris Stapleton and Emmylou Harris performing “Wildflowers.”

Meanwhile, the New Zealand singer ditched the white rose, symbolizing the Time’s Up movement, worn by the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Pink and Lana Del Rey.

Instead, she sewed a piece of prose written by women rights activist and neo-conceptual artist, Jenny Holzer.

“My version of a white rose – THE APOCALYPSE WILL BLOSSOM – an excerpt from the greatest of all time, jenny holzer,” the singer wrote on Twitter.

The note reads:

“Rejoice! Our times are intolerable. Take courage, for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstance can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom.”
