The Foo Fighters kicked off their Sonic Highways Tour in Brisbane, Australia today (Feb. 25) marking the band’s 20th anniversary. They played for a crowd estimated at 50,000 fans.

Foo frontman Dave Grohl, former drummer for grunge band Nirvana, set the mood right off the bat.

“It’s going to be a long fucking night. We’re going to play until they kick us off this fucking stage,” he said to uproarious cheers from the crowd.

The 25-song set list yielded some classic Foo Fighters songs and the band jammed liberally on a number of them. Joining Grohl on the tour are Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and former Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear.

The band launched into “Something for Nothing,” from their Sonic Highways album, before firing up the crowd with “Pretender” and “Learn to Fly,” according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

A surprise celebrity turned up in the crowd some 10,000 miles from home. Johnny Depp was spotted rocking out as the band ripped through its set, according to local reports.

The tour began last December in Cape Town, South Africa in support of their 2014 album, the band’s eighth studio set, released last November.

Eight of the songs on the album were recorded in different cities, including Austin, TX, Joshua Tree, Calif., Chicago,, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Rise Against, a melodic hardcore rock band from Chicago, is opening for the band on the Southeast Asian leg of its tour.

Grohl spiced up the concert with some amusing anecdotes, including how the band came to be arrested in Australia for riding motor scooters under the influence. (See below) Now, they have to report to customs every time they enter the country, he said.

He dedicated his follow up song to the “hardworking Gold Coast police.”
