An innocent fishing trip to Mexico changed all that.
Wandering into a local cantina one night with my husband, I was hoping to enjoy a live concert by a famous rock singer I’d not previously heard of – Sammy Hagar. But something strange happened. In the midst the bright lights, tequila, and screaming guitars, I was lifted out of my body and became engulfed in a feeling of otherworldly euphoria completely out of proportion to the situation. I came face-to-face with my inner self, an all-illuminating soul.
And God. In that moment, I suddenly knew everything, and I understood. As the months and years passed, the elation and enthusiasm resulting from my mystical experience continued and intensified. Supernatural incidents which both frightened and intrigued me, started occurring on a regular basis. I seriously began to wonder if I’d lost my mind.
These things just didn’t happen! Did they?
My search for explanations led me to rock star Sammy Hagar (former lead singer of Van Halen), who pulled me into his world of rock ‘n’ roll. He introduced me to concepts of reality that challenged everything I’d been taught through my Catholic upbringing.
In “Dance of the Electric Hummingbird,” Walker tackles the above events with scintillating results: celebrities, sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll are all here combined with her spiritual leanings.
All of this forces her to confront the incredible power of her mind and spirit, and to reevaluate her perception of reality and the meaning of life. “It’s a funny, deep, and complex coming-of-age memoir that began with an out-of-body experience I had during a rock concert,” Walker relates.

With Van Halen back in the news–although with David Lee Roth fronting– the memoir has caught fire with fans of the group.
Has the main subject of the book weighed in with his thoughts? Of course he has; says Hagar: “Pat Walker takes to heart the same type of messages I try to relate through my music and my life: go out and seek your dreams; celebrate your life and every part of who you are.”
Released via the same maverick company, Square One Publishers (via their Rainbow Ridge imprint), the book falls into that same revolutionary category as “Taking Woodstock” by Elliot Tiber . Released several years back, it became not only a best seller, but a movie from director Ang Lee.
“Dance of the Electric Hummingbird,” deserves to create the same excitement. A great read for sure.
