Pharrell Williams and former Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie are set to headline the NBA All-Star Game half-time show, which makes you wonder if the league really has a clue about attracting younger fans.

Williams is 44 and Fergie, real name Stacy Ann Ferguson, is 42, which track with the average age of 42, for TV viewers.

But what about attracting younger fans? Plus, the average age of players with NBA contracts is almost half the age of the halftime acts, 26.5 years old.

The event also just happens to coincide with the release of Pharrell’s fifth studio album No One Ever Really Dies, which suggests there is some commercial motivation behind his appearance.

Fergie dropped her second full-length solo album Double Dutchess last September, just after splitting from husband of eight years, Josh Duhamel, with whom she has four-year-old son Axl Jack.

She’ll get things going by singing the national anthem prior to tip-off.

Pharrell is expected to perform a medley of chart-topping hits as the headline act.

Which is not to say Pharrell and Fergie won’t put on a good show, but pop music, like basketball, is a young person’s game.

The All-Star game will take place Feb. 18 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The game will be seen via TV in more than 200 countries.
