Christina Aguilera leaped feet first into a market crowded with power pop princesses with the release of the first single “Your Body” off her upcoming album Lotus. Say what you will about the competition, there’s no denying the power of her vocals.
Aguilera, 31, has lifted her profile considerably on NBC’s hit show “The Voice,” which premiered last year, but she’s still struggling to make a comeback.
She took time off to have a baby in 2008 and 2009, at the peak of her career. During that time, she was eclipsed by a host of new stars like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Ke$ha and Katy Perry.
Aguliera was also considered to be suffering from a muddled image. A former Disney teen queen, she led the way down the road to raunch and overt sexuality taken by so many other pop singers.
When she launched her comeback she’d ditched raunch for glamour. Her sixth studio album Bionic followed. She also ventured into film with her 2010 movie “Burlesque.” The all-star cast included Cher, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Alan Cumming and Stanley Tucci. Both were considered flops.
Although her comeback has met with mixed success, her role on “The Voice” has given her new visibility and a chance to showcase her soaring soprano voice which spans five octaves.
“Your Body,” which debuted today (Sept. 14) on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, was written by Max Martin, Shellback and Savan Kotecha. Martin and Shellback produced.
“This album is about self-expression and freedom,” she told Seacrest. “There is a lot I have gone through personally over the past few years and this record represents a rebirth for me. The record is about freedom and getting back to the root of who I am and what I love to do.”
It will be released in November.
