Neil Young has proved once again he can spin and old saw into a folk rock, with the release of “Oh Susannah.” Yes, that “Old Susannah.” But what a difference.

Young teams with his band Crazy Horse and pumps out the cover for his new album Americana. He opens the tune with his classic, scratchy picking and strumming on his 1953 Les Paul Custom guitar, which now sells for $20,000 to $40,000.

The sound and style is so distinctive, it could be the opening from a 60s-era Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song. The only give away that it’s the 19th century Stephen Foster song are the words, which Young gets around to singing, after a couple of bars.

Americana is the first studio album from Young and Crazy Horse since Are You Passionate? in 2002 and Greendale in 2003, a 10-song rock opera.

Young records with Billy Talbot on bass and vocals, Ralph Molina, on drums, and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro on guitar.

Young told Rolling Stone the new album would feature “songs we all know from kindergarden.”

“But Crazy Horse has rearranged them, and they now belong to us,” he added.

In his notes with the album, Young says he and the band have played off the idea of “the folk process.” That’s where traditional songs are sometimes modified to make them more digestible by rock music fans. The end product is folk-rock.
