Met Unveils Glory of Mexican Art From Flourishing, 18th Century Era (Photos!)

Mexico is too often stereotyped as a dusty backwater to the United States, but when the U.S. was still a collection of British colonies, Mexico had imperial pretensions and a flourishing culture that produced dramatic artworks rivaling European Masters. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan has unveiled a new exhibit that captures the glory of Mexico’s 18th century milieu, during a period when it was known as “New Spain.”...

Egypt, In a Time of Islamic Terrorism, Is Still a Trip Worth Taking (Photos)

True, Egypt’s touring sector had been hard hit in recent times, but, every local we talked to said they hoped tourists would return to see the monuments. ...

Met Stands Fast Against Creeping Fascism Over Balthus Painting (Photo)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York’s premiere repository of art and culture, is standing fast against a coterie of critics, including neo-Fascists, who are demanding the removal of a Balthus painting titled “Therese Dreaming.” The painting depicts a young girl leaning back on a chair with her leg propped up and a far-away look on her face. J.D. Salinger’s ‘Catcher in the Rye,’ an Icon of Teen Rebellion, Turns 65

‘Tis the season … for my perennial pilgrimage to Manhattan in New York City, the warren of Holden Caulfield, the disgruntled protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s 1951 opus “The Catcher in the Rye.” The book turns 65 this year and has been endlessly quoted, celebrated, banned, copied, lionized and burned. Caulfield, the quintessential anti-hero, has become a cultural icon of teenage rebellion for generations of readers....
