‘Two Exquisite Flowers’ by Salvador Dali (1972)
Surrealist drawings by iconic artists such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte and Joan Miró are on view at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York in a stunning new exhibit entitled “Drawing Surrealism.”
The exhibition features some 165 works on paper by 70 artists from 15 countries, and is co-organized with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
“The show breaks new art historical ground by demonstrating the fundamental importance of drawing to the surrealist movement on the worldwide stage,” said William M. Griswold, director of the Morgan.
Fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtaposition of subject matter are the hallmarks of surrealist art.
Drawing, once considered a minor artistic medium, became a dynamic forum for evolution and innovation among surrealists in the first half of the twentieth century. The result is an expansive offering of graphic techniques, including automatic drawing, collage, decalcomania, exquisite corpse, and frottage.
“Drawing Surrealism” is on view at the Morgan Library & Museum through April 21, 2013.
