Alicia Keys stands up (and dances) for the downtrodden in a stunning new video for her song “Underground.” The song explores the humanity of those who are struggling to overcome adversity on the lowest rungs of society.

The video, in many ways, reflects Keys’ own upbringing on the streets of New York City.

I grew up in the middle of everything. I walked the streets alone, I rode the trains alone, I came home at three in the morning alone, that was what I did,” she said in an interview.

“The city had a huge influence on me because it’s such a diverse place. As hard as [growing up in it was], I always felt very blessed about being able to recognize different cultures and styles, people and places.

“I feel like the concrete alone just gave me a certain drive. I really saw everything: every negative I could possibly see from the time I could walk until now; and also every positive, every bright future, every dream that I could possibly see. So growing up around this big dichotomy definitely influenced my music.”

In that sense, “Underground” is a return to her roots, and the video is infused with the urban vibes of everyday life.

After a hiatus, Keys began working in earnest this past year. She raised her profile on television by hosting the 61 Grammys last year and appearing as a coach on “The Voice.”

In September, shed released a new single, “Show Me Love” with Miguel.

The accompanying music video starred actors Michael B. Jordan and Zoe Saldana.

The song is the first single from her upcoming seventh studio album A.L.I.C.I.A., set for an early 2020 release.

Keys performed the track for the first time during her appearance at the 2019 iHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas. The song was a commercial success on US Urban music charts and became Keys’ first song to reach the Billboard Hot 100 since “Girl on Fire” in 2012; peaking at number 90.

In rapid fire, she released her second single “Time Machine” and it’s accompanying music video in November.

Lyrics:
VERSE 1
She was walking in the street
Looked up and noticed
He was nameless
He was homeless
She asked him his name and
Told him what hers was
He gave her a story
About life
With a glint in his eye
And a corner of a smile
One conversation
A simple moment
The things that change us
If we notice
When we look up sometimes

B SECTION
They said I would never make it
But I was built to break the mold
The only dream that I been chasing
Is my own

HOOK
So I sing a song for the hustlers
Trading at the bus stop
Single mothers
Waiting on a check to come
Young teachers
Student doctors
Sons on the front line
Knowing they don’t get to run
This goes out to the Underdog
Keep on keeping at what you love
You’ll find that someday soon enough
You will rise up rise up yeah

VERSE 2
She’s riding in a taxi
Back to the kitchen
Talking to the driver
‘Bout his wife and his
Children
On the run from a country
Where they put you in
Prison
For being a woman
And speaking your mind
She looked in his eyes
In the mirror and he smiled
One conversation
A single moment
The things that change us
If we notice
When we look up
Sometimes

B SECTION
They said I would never make it
But I was built to break the mold
The only dream that I been chasing
Is my own

HOOK
So I sing a song for the hustlers
Trading at the bus stop
Single mothers
Waiting on a check to come
Young teachers
Student doctors
Sons on the front line
Knowing they don’t get to run
This goes out to the Underdog
Keep on keeping at what you love
You’ll find that someday soon enough
You will rise up rise up yeah

BREAK
Everybody Rise Up
You better Rise Up

HOOK
So I sing a song for the hustlers
Trading at the bus stop
Single mothers
Waiting on a check to come
Young teachers
Student doctors
Sons on the front line
Knowing they don’t get to run
This goes out to the Underdog
Keep on keeping at what you love
You’ll find that someday soon enough
You will rise up rise up yeah
