Vocalists Mark Winkler and Mary Foster Conklin will once again join forces to do an evening of the old and new at the Laurie Beechman Theater in Manhattan. “If anyone tells you that there is a hipper gig than the pairing of these vocalists, don’t you belive it,” says Joe Lang of Jersey Jazz.
Mark will be premiering tunes from his upcoming CD Sweet Spot, and Mary will undoubtedly uncover the sweet spot in a great American songbook gem or two.
You can bet there will be a Bobby Troup and Matt Dennis tune in the mix as well.
They will be joined by Janice Friedman on piano, Greg Ryan on bass and Ron Vincent on drums.
Conklin’s voice has been described as smoky with a tart twist of lemon. Her style has been described as both recognizably traditional yet unmistakably contemporary.
“Scratch her witty tough-girl-from Jersey patter,” wrote The Washington Post, “and you’ll find a sensitive artist (but not frail) with a wide-ranging boldly colored voice and an open ear for off-beat material.”
Winkler is a platinum award winning singer/lyricist who has had more than 150 of his songs recorded and/or sung by such artists as Dianne Reeves, Randy Crawford, Liza Minnelli, Bob Dorough and Lea Salonga.
He is the co-writer of the hit musical review Naked Boys Singing! in its 10th year playing Off Broadway.
