Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock seasoned the Palm Springs Film Festival with just the right amount of glamour and self-deprecating humor to keep most feet on the ground at one of the first shows of the Hollywood Awards season.

The festival drew mostly Hollywood veterans for the black-tie event that almost as laid back as a high school reunion.

Bullock, who is drawing Oscar buzz for her role in the movie “Gravity” with George Clooney revealed how much she learned about herself when she decided to Google her name.

A-Listers Turn Out for Palm Springs Fest

Among the revelations, she said she learned that she and Roberts were rivals for Clooney’s affections. Mostly, though, she said the comments were “depressing,” because they focused on her age and acting ability.

The Academy Award winner said she was adopting new rules for Awards season. “Better undergarments and no Spanx this year,” she said.

Bullock, 49, was honored with the Desert Palm Award for her role in “Gravity.” Roberts, 46, received the Spotlight Award, and Bruce Dern, 77, received a Career Achievement Award. He appeared this year in the “Nebraska.”

Matthew McConaughey, who starred in the moving drama “Dallas Buyers Club,” won the Desert Palm Award for male actors.

Director Steve McQueen was named Director of Year for “12 Years a Slave, and Lupita Nyong’o was honored for her breakthrough performance in the movie based on a true story set in the years before the Civil War.

Meryl Streep, an Icon Award winner, is a strong Oscar contender this year, again, for her role in “August: Osage County.”

“August: Osage County” co-star Margo Martindale, who presented Streep with the award had to remind the audience that she is, indeed, human.

Tom Hanks won the Chairman’s Award for his performances in “Captain Phillips” and “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Jennifer Lawrence, who is also drawing strong Oscar buzz, was absent, but Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams accepted the Ensemble Award for their work as a cast on the film “American Hustle.”
