Miley is the unquestioned queen of pop music at the moment. She’s audacious, sexual and unabashed about it. She really looks like she’s enjoying the show as much as the crowd when she performs.
Best of all she seems to love flouting convention.

Whether it was her sexual aggressiveness during the audacious, twerk-filled MTV Video Music Awards, or her revealing costume and Bad Santa routine at the Jingle Ball, the message seems to be clear–don’t take anything too seriously.
Rihanna was the same way at first. But she became so over-exposed her alluring sexuality became tiresome. Now even she seems bored by it; she just goes through the motions when she performs.
Before her, Lady Gaga had a lock on sexual politics, the heir apparent to Madonna. But she got lost in her own weirdness and trivialized herself with outlandish costumes and pretentious, over-reaching “art.”
Miley is young, hot and refreshing–yes refreshing–even though she’s been a part of pop culture consciousness since her Disney days. But she’s eclipsed all that. In contrast, her rivals look befuddled and confused about their images.
Selena Gomez is timid on stage by comparison and uncomfortable with her own powerful sexuality; no wonder she wants to put her music career on hold. It looks like it frightens her.
Demi Lovato looks even worse; she’s a hot mess of bi-polar contradictions, frayed nerves and “Freaky Friday” impulses.
Lorde may be the anti-Miley. For every action, there’s always a reaction. But so far, she’s a one-hit wonder and nowhere near the same caliber performer.
Vanessa Hudgens is the only contemporary who comes close in terms of pure sexual energy. But for now, Miley has cornered the market.
