It was probably her biggest performance fail yet in a recent string of embarrassing performances.
Carey, age 44, or 45, (she can’t even get that straight) is in the throes of an increasingly bitter break-up with husband Nick Cannon. They have two children together.
Make no mistake. Carey put on a good show, sashaying around the stage, holding her hand to her ear as if trying to concentrate on the note and making emotional expressions that matched the music. But that’s about as far as it went.
Her performances, which were caught on video, also showed her forgetting to sing, muffing the words or falling out of time with the track.
It’s possible she suffered a technical malfunction. During the performance, she kept playing with her ear piece and seemed to signal it wasn’t working. But that’s no excuse.
Carey is known for a five-octave vocal range and reportedly has hit notes higher than the 7th octave, so seeing her perform live is a treat. But some tabloids claim she no longer has the ability to hit the money notes.
It’s rare for a singer to lose their voice, especially at her age, but there’s no hiding lack of preparation and vocal training.
Fans spotted the obvious miscues and expressed their disappointment on social media.
Carey also botched a performance last December when she was the featured singer at NBC’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center.” She sang live but fell short of hitting the notes she’s famous for.
