You may recall, the 27-year-old singer was plagued by health issues including two vocal chord hemorrhages that required surgery to fix in 2011.
Her ills coincided with the release of her second studio album 21 the same year. After that, she essentially stopped performing. Her only subsequent release was the featured song for the James Bond movie “Skyfall” in 2013.
It was a legitimate question whether she would ever perform again, despite promising a new album, not only because of her health, but also because she was plagued by raging self-doubt and insecurity.
That’s what makes “Hello” and her new album so significant. As she pointed out, her long-awaited third album, titled 25, marks her transition to to adulthood and self-acceptance.
“My last record was a breakup record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make-up record,” she said. “I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up with everything I ever did and never did.”
Her sophomore album, 21, sold more than 11 million copies domestically and won big at the 2012 Grammys. Her last song, “Skyfall” won an Oscar.
