Lana Del Rey has a knack for finding the sweet spot of public attention. She’s raising eyebrows with the reported cover of her new single “Blue Jeans.” It shows a heavily tattooed hand at her throat as she lays on her back.
The photo carries suggestions of domestic violence and also racial overtones. “Video coming soon,” she tweeted with the photo.
The 25-year-old singer, who has already had several ups and downs in her short career, released her debut album Born to Die last month.
Del Rey is the latest self-made pop star who used YouTube videos to leverage her career. Her homemade video for her debut single “Video Games” went viral on the Internet. She was signed by Interscope Records.

The singer hit a bump, however, with a disastrous performance on “Saturday Night Live.” The singer was listless and sounded flat. But she redeemed herself with a follow up performance on David Letterman.
The SNL show was largely written off to nerves and inexperience. She won a BRIT Award, the UK equivalent of the Grammys last month, in another upswing of her career.
Meanwhile, her album soared to No. 2 on the charts, despite sharply negative reviews. Rolling Stone only gave the album two stars out of five.
“I’m used to doing things and having a very severe response,” Lana said in a recent. “My motto is the same just like what other people think of me is none of my business,” she added. “I’m used to people saying whatever they want.”
