  • Ric Ocasek and the iconic Cars are back. The new wave band set style and music trends from 1976 to 1988 and helped usher in the MTV era with pioneering music videos. Their new album Move Like This has all of the classic touches.

The band is promoting the album with a new video “Free,” filmed on their current tour. The album is their first new material since 1987.

Ocasek lends his distinctive vocals to keyboard and power pop guitar accompaniment.

Ocasek was the principal songwriter during the band’s heyday, and wrote nearly all of The Cars songs, sharing credit on here and there with bandmate Greg Hawkes.

The Cars last went on tour in 2005, without Ocasek.

They reconstituted as the New Cars and Todd Rundgren filled in on lead vocals.

Ocasek was none too pleased. But band members kissed and made up for the current tour.

All of the original members are back with the band, except bass player and backup singer Benjamin Orr, who died in 2000 of pancreatic cancer.

Orr is missed, but the music is unmistakably true. “The Cars haven’t moved their music an inch. This is the sound of a band picking up a conversation in midsentence,” wrote Rolling Stone.

The band reintroduced themselves at Lollapalooza festival, and reportedly were hit with younger fans.
