Chris Brown launched his musical comeback on the “Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon last night after his career was sidelined by a stint in jail. He performed two songs from his upcoming album X, which could make or break his career.

Brown, 25, has been dogged by troubles ever since his 2009 beatdown of then girlfriend Rihanna, for which he’s still serving probation.

Brown was ordered earlier this year by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James Brandlin to spend a year in jail and in rehab for violating his probation. Because of time served, he spent about six months in jail.

Since his release in June, he’s been working on the album and plotting his comeback. In his first interview since then with Billboard, he called jail a learning experience and time for reflection.

On the Tonight Show, he performed two songs “X” and “Loyal” off the album.

Brown, who gained substantial weight in jail, showed he could still move, performing some sharp dancing with his backup dancers.

Oddly, the R&B singer wore an red outfit that looked like a prison jumpsuit.

His sixth studio album will hit stores on Sept. 16. It’s sales will be a strong indicator of whether his fans are looking beyond his legal troubles. The record was delayed while he spent time in jail. Five singles already released.
