Tom Petty, one of rock’s iconic musicians, kicked of his summer tour with The Heartbreakers last night (Aug. 3) in San Diego. The set list was packed with some of his biggest, classic hits, including “I Won’t Back Down,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “Free Fallin’.”
The band, which has been playing since 1976, released their 13th studio album Hypnotic Eye on July 29 just before hitting the road.
The made an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel,” on July 31 before heading to San Diego’s Viejas Arena.
The album is “a straight hard-rockin’ record,” Petty told Rolling Stone. He conceded that it harked back to the band’s roots, reflected on such albums as 1978’s You’re Gonna Get It.
After 30 years together, Petty and the Band can still draw fans. Their 2010 album Mojo debuted at No. 2 on the charts and the arena was packed.
The two-month-long tour will crisscross the United States and finish on Oct. 10 at The Forum in Los Angeles. The band will hit Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sept. 10.
Last night, the band mixed in four songs from the new album– “American Dream Plan B,”Forgotten Man,” “Shadow People” and “U Get Me High.” The rest of the 20-song set was devoted to Heartbreaker classics and a couple of covers by The Byrds, Travelin’ Wilburys and Little Feat.
For a rock show, it was pretty low energy, but that’s always been Petty’s style. Guitar god Steve Winwood, formerly of Traffic, opened the show.
