  • Kristen Stewart’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” the dark re-telling of the classic fairy tale, now has some equally dramatic music to go long with the film from Florence + The Machine.

The song, “Breath of Life,” released today (Apr. 26) is the first single off the film’s soundtrack, which is expected to be released this summer.

It features lead singer Florence Welch’s soaring vocals, asking the question, “Who’s side am I on? Who’s side am I.”

The song opens with stirring drums and accompaniment from a full orchestra and a choir. It’s an evocative song that suggests yearning and striving for something that seems just out of reach.

    The opening lyrics go:

I was looking for the breath of a life
A little touch of a heavenly life
But all the choirs in my head say no
To get the dream of our life again
A little vision of the sight at the end
But all the choirs in my head say no.

Evil Queen Ravenna, played by Charlize Theron, reportedly inspired the song. “The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside,” said Welch about the character. “She’s sort of eternal, but inside there’s nothing …

“She has this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she’s so beautiful, so it’s this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death.”

The song, however, seems more fitting for Snow White, whose destiny is uncertain and fraught with danger. Yet she possesses the same beauty, although a much different destiny.

In this version of the tale, evil Queen Ravenna recruits the Huntsmen (Chris Hemsworth) to kill Snow White after learning from the mirror that her step-daughter is not only fairer, but will one-day rule the kingdom.

The Huntsman has a change of heart and teaches Snow White how to fight With the aid of seven dwarves and Prince William (Sam Claflin), she leads a rebellion that aims to topple her evil stepmother.

The soundtrack is slated for release, May 29. You can pre-order the album now as a CD or download by clicking the link above. So far, no other tracks have been released. The film hits theaters June 1. Check out the song below and Kristen’s cool pics above.
