Taylor Swift is taking aim at an as yet unknown target with a new album, her fourth, due out next year. If it’s anything like her previous releases it will be laden with meaning and based on experiences drawn from her life. So what’s the theme, and who’s the target?
At the moment, Swift isn’t talking about what inspirations, or individuals, she’ll tap to write her songs, but she told MTV News, the album will definitely have a theme.
“I can’t tell you, because it’s a secret,” Swift said. “It will be unveiled when it all comes out, because they all seem to have a theme to them, the records that we’ve put out so far, and this one is no different.”
While Swift is coy about the message, she did say it will be “very different” from her previous albums.
“It’s very different in what it’s about, but it’s no different in the fact that it has its own name,” she said.
Swift’s eponymous debut album, Taylor Swift is said to have been based on her diaries from her early teens.
As such, her songs describe coming of age experiences such as insecurity, young love and teenage angst.
Her second album, Fearless, won four Grammy Awards. Not all her songs are based on heartbreak.
She wrote “Fearless” the title song for her album about the need to be fearless when falling in love. It’s about a perfect first date.
Her song “Back to December” off her third album, Speak Now, is also semi-autobiographical, and is supposed to be an apology from her to someone she treated badly.
“I’ve never apologized to someone in a song before,” she said about the song.
“This is about somebody who was incredible to me, just perfect to me in a relationship, and I was really careless with him, so these are the words that I would say to him — that he deserves to hear.”
Many thought the song was about “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner, who briefly dated the singer before she broke it off.
Likewise, “Innocent” was said to be about Kanye West, while ex-boyfriend John Mayer is said to be the subject of her song “Dear John” about love gone wrong.
“It was wrong
Don’t you think 19’s too young
To be played
By your dark, twisted games
When I loved you so,” she sang.
