Now that “Gossip Girl” is over and done with, Taylor Momsen is focusing on music. She and her band The Pretty Reckless performed a set last night (June 22) at the PUMA & Nylon Magazine event at the Puma Social Club at the South Street Seaport in New York City.
The always brooding (seemingly) Momsen was written out of the show about rich Upper East Siders in the season finale.
The band’s first EP came out this week. She performed her current single “Make Me Wanna Die” and “Zombie.”
She was dressed in thigh highs, garter and heavy black raccoon eye make up. Critics have compared her to Courtney Love, who fronts the band Hole (every now and then).
But Momsen bristles at the comparison.
“I don’t wanna be Courtney Love—I wanna be Kurt Cobain,” she told Entertainment Weekly in an interview earlier this year.
“He’s brilliant and his songs are genius. The Hole records are great. Everyone always compares me to Courtney Love because they think we like dress the same and we both have blond hair, wear lipstick and dresses.
“But I’m sorry, don’t a lot of girls dress like that? I look at Nirvana. I don’t look at Hole,” she said.
She says the Beatles are her biggest inspiration because the did everything first and best.
Momsen says her single, “Make Me Wanna Die” is a tragic love song.
“It’s Romeo and Juliet—can’t live without your lover so you die. It’s the Pretty Reckless’ first single. We just shot a video for it, but I don’t wanna say too much. It fits the song. It’s very dark,”
As for her wardrobe, Momsen says pants are out.
“I don’t really like pants, man. I like tights. I’m not really a pants person… I choose not to wear pants!”
