Norah Jones made a lot of new friends at the South by Southwest music festival after debuting her new album. Although she’s been busy with side-projects, she’s been out of the limelight since her 2010 tour.

Jones play her entire new album. Little Broken Hearts at La Zona Rosa last night (Mar. 17). “It’s a little scary sharing these songs with new people, but we’re all friends, right?” she said from the stage.

Jones collaborated on the 12-song set with Danger Mouse, after she worked with the group and Daniele Luppi on their album Rome. Jones sang three songs on the record.

The New York singer called her fifth studio effort a concept album drawn from a personal break up. Danger Mouse, real name Brian Burton, wrote most of the lyrics and instrumentation with Jones.

“It seemed to make sense to come back to my new record,” Jones said. “I’m just going to play the new record. I’m not even going to play any old songs because it’s South By Southwest,” she said.

“It doesn’t seem wrong to do it that way. It’s fun. This is a festival. It’s for new bands but it’s also just for new stuff, so it feels right to do the new record.”

Jones drew the inspiration for the album cover from the vintage movie posters that Burton has hanging in his Los Angeles studio.

“Is it weird hearing music you’ve never heard before?” she asked.

The album is another departure for Jones. She continues to move away from the jazz and blues-inflected sound of her Grammy-winning album Come Away With Me. She won five Grammy Awards for the album, which sold more than 2.7 million copies.

She moved more into a country and bluegrass sound with follow up efforts. Her second album, Feels Like Home, was released in 2004 and was the first influenced by country music.

Her fourth studio album, The Fall, debuted at number three in November 2009, but was the poorest selling of her releases. Even so, it sold 1.5 million copies worldwide and was certified gold or platinum in 14 countries as of 2010, according to the RIAA.
