Carly Rae Jepsen sang the song of the summer “Call Me Maybe” on the “Today Show’s” Summer Stage this morning. She got the Rockefeller Plaza crowd on their feet and rocking to the catchy tune, which began as a YouTube viral sensation.
Jepsen, 26, is a protege of fellow Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber, who also got his start as a YouTube phenom.
“Call Me Maybe” is the first song by a Canadian artist to reach the top of the digital chart since Bieber’s “Baby” in January 2010. Bieber has been actively promoting her in the United States.
She debuted in America on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in March, performing, you guessed it, “Call Me Maybe.” The video for the song has been viewed more than 215 million times on YouTube.
Jepsen had a brush with scandal earlier this year when a sex tape emerged purportedly with her in it. Jepsen had been promoting a squeaky clean image, when a hacker emerged trying to sell nude photos of the singer that he claimed were lifted from her site.
Jepsen later confirmed the photos and video were hers. But she hasn’t seemed to suffer any fallout among her teen and tween fans.
She teamed up with Adam Young of electro-pop project Owl City for her new tune “Good Time,” released in June. Not surprisingly, it’s a syrupy homogenized pop song with a steady dance beat that seems written for radio.
