  • Carly Rae Jepsen continues to get a big push from mentor Justin Bieber, who duets on her track “Beautiful,” released over the weekend on YouTube. But is the song too close to One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful?”

The song will debut on her new album Kiss, set to be released Sept. 18. Jepsen, like Bieber, is a YouTube phenom. Her hit single “Call Me, Maybe” exploded on the video site.

Bieber signed the fellow Canadian singer, 26, to his label and has been promoting her aggressively. Kiss is her second album, but first produced under Bieber’s auspices.

Jepsen’s earlier album Curiosity was released on Valentine’s Day this year. Bieber announced the same day that Jepsen has been signed to School Boy Records, the label run by his manager, Scooter Braun.

The controversy with One Direction involves similar lyrics. Carly Sings:

“What makes you so beautiful is that you don’t know how beautiful you are to me.
You’re not trying to be perfect, nobody’s perfect, but you are to me.
You try to take my breath away feel the words that I don’t say.”

One Direction’s lyrics go like this:

If only you saw what I can see,
You’ll understand why I want you so desperately,
Right now I’m looking at you and I can’t believe,
    You don’t know, Oh oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful, Oh oh,
    That’s what makes you beautiful

Actually, it’s a stretch to compare the two.

“I’ve written on almost every song and these are lyric ideas that I’ve been collecting since I was like 17,” said Jepsen. Check out her song below.
