  • Melanie Amaro is trying to capitalize on her win on the premiere season of X-Factor USA with the release of her second new single “Long Distance.” It’s just another peppy pop tune, but her distinctive voice does set it apart.

Amaro, 20, released her debut single “Don’t Fail Me Now” in August, laying the groundwork for her upcoming album, Truly, which is expected to drop next year.

In case you’ve already forgotten her, which is always possible in this media saturated world, she’ll make a guest appearance on this year’s show on Thursday (Nov. 6). She’ll perform her new song.

Amaro was born in Fort Lauderdale, Fla, but moved as a toddler to Tortola, British Virgin Islands and grew up there with her grandparents because her parents felt they were too poor to care for her. It made for a compelling back story during the competition last year.

The judges at the time were Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid. Amaro’s vocals set her apart. She has a deeper, powerful voice that adds a rich tone when she sings.

You may also remember Amaro from her Pepsi commercial with rock icon Elton John. It debuted during Super Bowl XLVI on NBC as part of her X Factor prize. She sings and dances to a cover of “Respect”, with John, Flavor Flav, and Annie Ilonzeh.
