  • Jack White fires a blunderbuss in his new video for “Sixteen Saltines,” and it’s loaded with disturbing images of children that border on kiddie porn at worst, and a manual for depraved juvenile delinquency at best.

White is flying solo now, but the tune has the same jarring guitar and pounding beat of his White Stripes days. Maybe the route he’s taking with the video is the only way to get attention in these coarse times.

White also plays a victim in the video, a captive of the demon children. Apparently, he’s the only one over the age of 16 as kids rule an impoverished neighborhood and take out their drug-induced hostilities on anyone and everyone… including him.

The video has a “Lord of the Flies” quality as the kids run roughshod over abandoned warehouses and apartments smashing bottles and ripping up the scenery. They play out a punk existence of drugs and generally rotten behavior.

In some of the scenes, a ten-year-old boy tattoos his body. A 12-year-old boy and girl end up fighting after playing a game. Apparently schoolboy romance is one of White’s favorite subjects.

The saltine reference may be to the schoolyard game called the Saltine Challenge. A person has 60 seconds to eat six saltines without taking a drink of water. It’s harder than it sounds because the saltines quick dry out your mouth.

Trying the game with 16 saltines would be pure torture, but that may be White’s point. Metaphors run riot through the lyrics.

She’s got stickers on her locker
And the boy’s number’s there in magic marker
I’m hungry and the hunger will linger
I eat sixteen saltine crackers then I lick my fingers

White, of course, is the ultimate victim in his own video; Check it out below to see how it ends.

“Sixteen Saltines” is a preview of White’s upcoming solo album Blunderbuss, which is due out April 24.
