Poison singer Bret Michaels has suffered a minor setback in his condition and is facing months of rehabilitation to regain full function of his motor skills. There is no guarantee he will ever be 100 percent, but doctors are hopeful.

Test results indicate that Michaels has developed a side effect from the brain hemorrhage, called hyponatremia (a lack of sodium in the body) which leads to seizures.

He is responding well to tests and treatments. Even though today was a minor setback, doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery,” according to a new post on Michaels’ Web site.

Michaels is lucky to be alive. He quickly sought treatment for his condition. “Doctors state Michaels is very lucky as his condition could have been fatal,” the singer’s Web site confirmed.

Michaels has undergone a continuous series of tests while in the ICU including angiograms, CT scans, MRI s and transcranial dopplers (TCDs).

The new post confirmed a report by TheImproper that the brain hemorrhage could take months to recover from. The good news is that his condition has been confirmed to have been upgraded from critical to stable,

“With further testing and rehabilitation, we’re hopeful that Bret will gradually improve as the blood surrounding the brain dissolves and is reabsorbed into his system, which can be a very painful recovery and take several weeks to months, ” the post read.

“Michaels remains under 24-hour observation in the ICU and is in positive spirits.

The Web post also went into more detail about the nature of his affliction, known as a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke that causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the bas e of the brain.

“It presents itself suddenly as the sound of a loud gunshot or thunderclap at the back of the head, causing severe cranial pain and muscle spasms… Additional studies are planned throughout the week to hopefully detect the exact cause of the rupture.

“The most common cause of this condition is a spontaneous rupture of a cerebral aneurysm, however 15 percent to 20 percent of spontaneous episodes of this hemorrhage are found to have no cause.

The singer’s condition could be related to Type 1 diabetes from which he’s suffered since a child. It’s the most serious form of diabetes.
