Katy Perry must have been watching the headlines while in Hawaii as her marriage to Russell Brand crumbled. Beseiged by Internet and tabloid rumors, she finally spoke out–and laid down the law on her divorce.
The hot celebrity couple’s divorce was the biggest shock of 2011. It came amid contradictory signs from both Katy and Russell.
Katy Perry Marriage Ends in Blow Up
Perry, 27, and Brand, 36, were married in October 2010 in a lavish ceremony in India.
Despite reports of marital discord, Brand intimated in early December that everything was fine in the marriage.
“I am really happily married,” the 36-year-old comedian told Ellen DeGeneres in front of a national audience.
“I’m married to Katy,” he continued. “Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive.”
But when the two took separate vacations over the Christmas holidays, the rumor mill exploded. The stories were seemingly confirmed when Brand filed divorce papers on Dec. 30.
Katy Perry May Have to Pay in Divorce
Among the reported reasons, tabloids cited Katy’s heavy work schedule, her partying, fights over kids, Brand’s sour disposition and his disrespect for Katy’s strongly religious parents. They disapproved of the wedding.
Her parents, Keith and Mary Hudson, both pastors at Church On The Rise in Westlake, OH, said the divorce was a “gift from God.”
Perry remained silent while on vacation in Hawaii, but she finally spoke out today (Jan. 7) in no uncertain terms.
“I am so grateful for all the love and support I’ve had from people around the world,” she said on Twitter, thanking her fans. “You guys have made my heart happy again.”
“Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me. Not a blog, magazine, ‘close sources’ or my family,” she wrote.
She’s expected to appear at the People’s Choice Awards this weekend, while Brand has reportedly been told not to go to the event to avoid any awkward moments. She’s up for five awards.
