Carrie Underwood beats herself up, figuratively at least, in a new video for “Cry Pretty,” her ballad about the emotional ups and downs of a country musicians life. It’s her first since her accidental fall that left her with a broken wrist and nearly 50 stitches in her face.
It could be called a comeback of sorts. Carrie has been keeping a low profile since her accident. Last night, though, she returned to her roots to release the video on the latest episode of “American Idol.”
Carrie won the fourth season of the show in 2005. Now she’s back as a mentor to other aspiring artists.
The single is off her new album by the same name, due out in September.
In the video, she goes for high production value. She’s pictured walking the dimly lit streets and cuts to her in a seedy hotel room. She’s also pictured in the shower. With her clothes on! But really kinda sexy wet.
The scene changes, however, when Carrie walks out on the stage, a country music princess. The point: even superstar performers have their moments of self-doubt and depression.
Underwood unveiled “Cry Pretty” onstage at last months’ American Country Music Awards (ACM) in Las Vegas, and has since announced a new album of the same name due
Underwood penned the song with Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna and Liz Rose. Rolling Stone calls it “an empowering anthem” to mark her return from her injuries last November.
“The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can’t hold them back,” Underwood said in a statement.
“It really speaks to a lot of things that have happened in the past year and I hope when you hear it, you can relate those feelings to those times in your life.”
