Jazz singer and actress Renee Olstead recreates the look of an early ’50s chanteuse in a stunning new photo shoot for Regard magazine. She talks about the end of her long-running television series, her new tour and a new EP due this month.
In October, ABC announced that the upcoming fifth season of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” would be its last. Olstead has appeared on the show as Madison Cooperstein, a friend of the main character, since the show debuted. Filming the final episodes were emotional, she told the magazine.
“I feel like everyone really came of age on “Secret Life,” she tells the magazine.

“We all went from teenagers to adults; some of our cast have even decided to start families. We’ll be friends for a long, long, time.”
With her show out of the way, Olstead is focusing on her singing career. She’s currently touring with jazz composer and trumpeter Chris Botti.
While she’s known for singing jazz, her eclectic musical influences are reflected on her new album. “I definitely took some notes from the doo-wop groups of the ’50s and the Phil Specter-ish girl groups of the ’60s,” she says.
She captures the era’s look in clothes by retro-designer Betty Paige. “It’s ok to have boobs and a butt in a slinky ’50s dress. I love the ‘hourglass look.'”
