Designer Tamara Mellon and Alexa Ray Joel pose backstage yesterday (Feb. 12) at the Go Red For Women Red Dress Collection 2015 during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Alexa Ray Joel, Kristin Cavallari and a host of other celebrities showed off the latest designs in red as part of the “Go Red For Women Red Dress Collection 2015” presented by Macy’s at New York Fashion Week.

The event was staged as part of “Celebrate National Wear Red Day,” an event that highlights women’s heart health.

The American Heart Association and The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute founded the event in 2003, motivated by the estimated 500,000 American women who die annually from heart disease.

Many women weren’t paying attention to the disease because they were under the impression that it affected more men than women, according to the organization’s Web site.

National Red Day, now in its 12th year is held on the first Friday in February every year.

Yesterday, (Feb. 12) celebrities hit the runway as part of Fashion Week.

Joel and Cavallari were joined by “Orange is the New Black” actress Laverne Cox, Cynthia Bailey, “I Dream of Genie’s” Barbara Eden and members of singing group Fifth Harmony.

Also hitting the stage were singer Ciara, actress Zendaya Coleman, actress Donna Mills and “Today” show host Hoda Kotb.

Since the group started raising awareness, it says nearly 90 percent of women have changed their health behavior for the better, one-third have lost weight, more than 50 percent have increased their exercise and six out of 10 women have changed their diet.
