Charli XCX and Troye Sivan oddly look right at home amid the pop kitsch in the new video for Charli’s song “1999.” Not that much has changed at all, especially when it comes to pop music, or has it?

Charli, real name Charlotte Aitchison, would have been all of seven years old back then. So the song isn’t so much about revisiting her past, as it is about having a little fun with a year before the nation lost its innocence.

Hey, it wasn’t even a particularly memorable year, but the video makes the most of all the cultural touchstones from the fading 20th century.

I’m good not redoing that year,” she tells E! News.

“The song is not really that serious. I don’t really want to go back to 1999. It’s more like, I thought it was a cool title for a song. I like pop music to be fun and not always take itself really seriously, so it’s just a cool way to explore a fun idea for a video, fun idea for artwork, stuff like that,” she says.

In 1999, I was probably just wishing I was Britney Spears or Baby Spice,” she says.

Aitchison was born in Cambridge, England, the daughter of a Scottish father, Jon Aitchison, and a Gujarati Indian mother, Shameera.

Although she’s thoroughly British, her walk down memory lane is decidedly American.

Sivan, 23, is even further removed from the American experience. He was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. He got his start as a YouTube personality and has built up a huge following with more than four million subscribers and 241 million total views of his music video blogs.

“I was definitely a fan of his work before, but when he put “My My My!” out, I was like, whoa, I’m obsessed with Troye,” says Aitchison.

For the record, recreating the scene of Jack and Rose from the monster hit movie “Titanic” is her fav.
