UK rocker Ellie Goulding made her debut in China, performing at the Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong today (Aug 12) and received an enthusiastic welcome from a crowd that seemed to know the words to almost every one of her songs.
Goulding, 27, is a phenom in Great Britain.
This year, she won the Brit Award, the U.S. equivalent of a Grammy, for Best British Female singer. She’s sold more than 4 million albums and 15 million singles worldwide since she launched her career, although she’s not that well known in the United States.
She played the Coachella Music Festival, a major U.S. showcase for emerging artists in April.
She kicked off her North American tour a month earlier, selling out the The Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Her vocal range is associated with a soprano, although she’s better known for her breathy tone and emotive delivery. Like ’70s icon Stevie Nicks, she has a distinctive voice that is all her own.
Goulding, who is also known for her athleticism, hit the stage in a black bra top and a pair of nude-colored spandex wrapped with a plaid long-sleeve shirt. She sported a Bindi, just like her NYC concert.
“For me, the appeal has always been to be really fit and strong,” she recently told the Sunday Times of London. “I think a pair of powerful legs on a girl, or a bigger bum from doing squats, is so sexy.”
She seems to practice what she preaches. Her show was high-energy from start to finish.
