Alexa Ray Joel opens up for the first time since her abortive suicide attempt and blames her actions on a battle with depression, anxiety, and a break up with her boyfriend, but not on her famous, dysfunctional parents.
Joel, the daughter of pop icon Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, has been in the spotlight since birth and has been compared to her parents at every turn.
“I felt like I was in a black hole and I couldn’t see out,” Joel, 24, tells People magazine. “I hit rock bottom that day. A part of me wanted people close to me to know – not the whole world.”
The trigger for her depression? A very bad case of heartbreak, she says, from a bust-up with first-love, Jimmy Riot, who once played bass in her band.
“I was addicted to this man,” she says, “and it spiraled out of control.”
Joel hit bottom on Dec. 5, when she was rushed to the hospital after phoning 9-1-1, claiming she had taken and overdose of pills.
It turned out the substance was a non-fatal diet supplement, but the emotions behind the act where raw and real.
The attempt took place shortly after she returned from a stormy vacation with mom Christie, who some reports said, has always been hypercritical of Alexa’s physical appearance.
Some tabloids reported that the episode pushed her over the edge. But Alexa says it had nothing to do with her relationship with her mother.
“Nobody is more supportive of my physical appearance than [my mother],” the singer says
Joel, People reports, is now following in her mother, appearing in commercials for Prell shampoo, which featured Christie 25 years ago.
She also has an album out in June.
Joel sees a therapist and says she is talking more openly to her parents.
“It’s hard because [people] compare my music to my father and my looks to my mother,” she says. “And I like to think that my music and my voice are different than my father’s and my look is very different than my mother’s. Can’t I just be me?”
