  • Stonewalls in Riverhead is located in the middle of a golf course.

    Stonewalls Restaurant is located at The Woods at Cherry Creek Golf Course, which sprawls across 140 acres in Riverhead. Owners Vincent Sasso and Charles Jurgens also own and operate the course and nearby The Links at Cherry Creek.

    Executive chef Guy Peuch, formerly of The Water Club in Manhattan and The Inn on the Harbor in Cold Spring Harbor, is an industry veteran with more than 40 years of Continental and European experience.

    Joanne Starkey of The New York Times rated the restaurant “very good” and singled out Peuch’s famous crab cakes and array of French classics and familiar American fare.”

    Peter Gianotti of Newsday declares Stonewalls “is easily the most impressive restaurant to open in Riverhead since potatoes began giving way to grapes!”

    The light and airy dining room provides guests with a panoramic view of rolling green hills, tall trees, a large lake, and blossoming flowers in season. Tables, adorned with fresh flowers, are dressed with crisp, white tablecloths and cream-colored overlays. Taupe-painted walls accentuate golden hues shown in elegant draperies.

    The Grill Room, across from the dining room, is enclosed with windows also offers scenic views of the golf course.

    Stonewalls Restaurant focuses on new American cuisine with French flair. Appetizers range from $10 to $15 and include jumbo lump crab cakes with red pepper coulis; Mariner’s-style Prince Edward Island mussels with shallot, white wine and parsley in a light cream sauce; and lobster bisque garnished with diced shrimp.

    Entrées, ranging in price from $25 to $33, include veal escalopine forestiére with mushroom, shallot, and Madeira sauce served with whipped potato, haricots verts and purée crécy; classic Long Island duck a l’orange with wild rice and haricots verts and grilled filet mignon, melted gorgonzola, bordelaise sauce, purée Crécy, haricots vert and potato.

    In seafood, the menu also offers jumbo white shrimp sauté with tomato, garlic, shallots and basil on saffron risotto; and osso buco milanese braised with vegetables, saffron and tomatoes, and saffron risotto.

    Seasonal chef specialties include cassoulet of Castelnaudary with white beans, pork, sausage and duck confit; Coq au vin with certified organic chicken marinated in red wine, mushrooms, and pearl onions; and New York rabbit in a gibelotte stewed with white wine, shallots, tomatoes and a touch of tarragon pomme a l’anglaise.

    Lunch entrées range from $15 to $30 and feature Morrocan-style penne with lamb sausage, white beans, goat cheese, tomato and basil; bruschetta with spicy sprimp; and dry-aged sirloin steak au poivre with haricots verts and fingerling potatoes.

    Desserts, priced at $8, include Tahitian vanilla caramel custard; cold raspberry soufflé with raspberry coulis and mint; and vanilla almond cheesecake with vanilla ice cream and red fruits compote.

    Promotions include seasonal three-course dinner prix fixe menus for $27.50, a three-course lunch prix fixe menu for $19.50, and “Prime Rib Thursdays,” a three-course dinner for $45.
