  • Fiona Apple Every Single NightFiona Apple won’t be mistaken for Lady Gaga or any other cookie-cutter dance-driven artist dominating the charts. Her new single “Every Single Night,” from her new album is a melodic tip-toeing through her subconscious.

Apple, 34, set the music world on its ear with her debut album Tidal in 1996. She was just 19. Her distinctive contralto voice, piano skills and biting, angst-filled lyrics set her apart. She still stands alone.

There’s nothing manufactured about this quirky tune, off her album The Idler Wheel, for short.

The set was supposed to debut in 2011, but for some reason it got back-burnered at Epic Records, leading to her infamous comment: “I can’t remember any of my new songs because they’ve been done for a fucking year.”

Epic finally announced a June 19 release date, and Apple made a rare appearance at the South-by-Southwest Music Festival last month to promote it. She performed the song and a few other new tunes. Apple kicks off a 27-date tour in Ithaca, N.Y the same day.

For the record, the new album is titled The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.
