As a Disney teen queen, Demi Lovato took a back seat to Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. But she came into her own at a high profile performance as part of NBC’s holiday special, “A White House Christmas.”
She belted out the popular chestnut “All I Want for Christmas is You,” a risky pick since Mariah Carey just revived the 1966 song as part of her Christmas album.
Nonetheless, Demi pulled off the song with aplomb by singing a classic arrangement compared with Mariah’s up-tempo pop treatment. Demi also imbued the song with passion, rising to the occasion.
The 20-year-old has come a long way to her showcase White House performance. Although her “Camp Rock” movies and Disney sitcom, “Sonny with a Chance,” were successful, her early teen years were stormy.
Lovato’s meltdown came in Oct. 2010 while she was touring with the Jonas Brothers band in South America, just after breaking up with Joe Jonas.
She got into an altercation and punched backup dancer Alex Shorty Welch and landed in rehab. Rehab, she says, has really turned her life around. She’s become outspoken about her problems with bipolar personality and hasn’t looked back.
Her job as an “X Factor USA” judge, has raised her profile, and if her talent was overshadowed before, it isn’t now. Check out the video below and follow TheImproper on Twitter for all the latest music updates.
