Actress Demi Lovato is getting over her eating disorder with a little help from her friends, even if she can’t stand one of them every now and then. Now, who could that be?
“There were two people [who were there for me],” Lovato says. “No matter how many times we fight, we will always be in each others’ lives.
“[Miley Cyrus and I] are very strong-headed, so when we fight, it’s brutal and we’re like, ‘We’re never going to be friends again!’ Then two days later, we’re like, ‘I love you and I miss you!’”
Selena Gomez also helped Demi get through the worst spots, and Lovato counts her among her closest friends.
“Selena and I, we never fight. She’s not a confrontational person at all. Both of them will never leave my life no matter what happens, because we’ve been through so much together.”
Lovato says dealing with her eating disorders remains a daily struggle. But she’s says she’s glad she isn’t starving herself or vomiting after meals anymore.
Demi Lovato: Not Supposed to Be Stick-Thin
She credits rehab and therapy last January after a meltdown while on tour in South America with the Jonas Brothers band.
“I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, I don’t throw up after my meals, I don’t starve myself,” Lovato, 19, says in the February 2012 issue of Seventeen magazine. “There’s nothing that I do that I feel ashamed of.”
Demi, who completed a three-month stint in rehab, vomited more than five times a day at the height of her bulimia. But the 5’2” former Disney actress now accepts that she’s not meant to be to be rail-thin.
Most importantly, she can live with it.
“I’m not supposed to be stick thin — my body’s not made to be that way,” she says. “I feel like I have a good butt. I don’t have boobs, but I got a butt!”
Self-acceptance and therapy have helped the former bulimic and drug abuser turn the corner on her afflictions.
“I’m not gonna lie. I was self-medicating (a couple of years ago),” Lovato recounts. “I was doing things like drinking and using [drugs], like a lot of teens do to numb their pain.”
Demi Lovato: Sober Is Sexy and Cool
Demi, who used to drink and party all night, has changed her stance on what’s cool now that she’s clean and sober.
“I think sober is sexy,” she says. “It’s cool. I think it’s way cooler to be above the influence than under the influence.”
